This Japanese Tansu cabinet dates from the early 1800s Edo Period. The main body of this piece is hand made using the finest Cedar wood. The metal details and edges hand forged and beaten by highly skilled Japanese blacksmiths.
Tansu are traditionally used as portable storage chests. In Japanese traditional houses, there were no fixed chairs, tables, or pieces of furniture in the living space. So Tansu were intended as mobile cabinetry, and used to keep objects of daily use, personal objects, clothing etc.
