African Marka Janus Marionette

This is a Vintage Marka Janus Merekun Double Headed Figure Puppet from Mali. Marka are famous for their masks and puppets. This puppet is a ceremonial puppet and decorated with brass hammered metal, yarn pompoms and cowrie shells. A Janus puppet like this is used in ceremonies related to the circumcision of adolescents and in theatrical performances. Like folktales and other theatrical forms, this Janus puppet performance shows cultural and social values, as well as is used in a play that shows the relationship between two wives, a good and a bad wife and their husband. This is a wonderful puppet and would be a great addition to your collection.
