A superb example of colonial New Zealand jewellery — a large great white shark tooth, crowned with a hand-engraved 9 carat gold cap and bail, monogrammed with the original owner's initials.
Shark tooth jewellery was a distinctive tradition in 19th and early 20th century New Zealand and Australia, worn as both a striking natural curiosity and a symbol of the wearer's connection to the sea. Large examples like this one — with the tooth's natural serrated edge fully intact — are increasingly hard to find, and this piece stands out for its size and the quality of the goldwork capping it.
The gold cap shows lovely age-appropriate patina and a beautifully scripted monogram, likely commissioned by a jeweller for its original owner as a personal or sentimental piece. The tooth itself retains its natural coloring and serration, a testament to careful keeping over the better part of a century (or more).
A rare piece for collectors of colonial jewellery, natural history curiosities, or maritime antiques.
